Qastor software is continuously being improved and new features are added. Many of these improvements are not transparent to the user, but have been implemented to create a smoother and faster navigation system. This page includes a summary of the changes made.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get into contact.

What's new in this version

  • Previously, the Release Notes could be downloaded just like the various versions of Qastor. Now they can be viewed directly via our website. From there they can be downloaded as well if you need them for offline use.

  • Most documents from the Qastor Knowledge Base as delivered with Qastor have been placed online too and can be viewed without the need to start Qastor.

Automatically Adjusting Information Windows

The text and values inside the windows may change automatically in a number of cases:

  • When positioning information is lost then the values will freeze. This is 10 seconds by default and can be changed in Mariner Settings - Advanced Settings - Display Settings - Observation Display Settings. (Administrator rights are needed for this.)
  • When no new positioning information is received after this set time, the values will be displayed in a dimmed manner.
  • When positioning switches from a more accurate mode (when received from a pilot's PPU system or the vessel's NMEA messages) to AIS after 30 seconds, then the text will change to, for example, AIS Heading or AIS ROT and the values will be displayed rounded to the nearest degree.

Output of data

Logging Settings

It is now possible to output data to a serial port.
A user-definable format can be generated to directly log to file and/or send via ethernet or serial connection to a third-party utility.

Touch Tabs

Menu bar, Tool bars, Instrument Panel

In order to give the navigation chart as much space as possible, it is possible to switch off the various bars and the instrument panel. This could already be done via the menu: View - Toolbars or View - Instrument Panel.
Now it can also be done quickly with these new buttons at the top right of your screen. They are toggle buttons, meaning that you may press them repetitively to switch items on or off.

If you would like to have a look at another location in the navigation screen, you may pan there using your mouse button or, if touch functionality is enabled on your computer, you may use your finger tips. Now the new recenter button will appear in the lower left corner of your screen to manually recenter. If no operator input is detected Qastor will auto center after 15 seconds.

This applies to Navigation Mode only.

Displaying Range Markers

Drawing Range Markers

To increase the contrast of Range Markers with the navigation chart, the option has been added to adjust their color and thickness.

The option can be found under the Mariner Settings - Advanced Settings - Display Settings.
Administrator rights are needed to adjust the settings.

Distance calculations on Routes

Distances along routes used to be calculated from waypoint to waypoint. But as vessels generally follow curved lines and don't actually sail from waypoint to waypoint, these distances can be different. Also, the ETA calculations depended on the distances between waypoints rather than the actual track to be sailed, so these could differ as well.
Now, new calculations are in place and distances along routes and ETAs are more accurate.

Distance calculations are now carried out along curved leglines instead of along straight leglines.

Meteo Information Windows

Display of multiple meteo data stations simultaneously

The meteo information window can now be opened multiple times to be able to view multiple stations simultaneously.
Right click on a station and select 'Meteo Information' from the drop down menu which appears.
These windows can be placed anywhere in the screen by dragging them with the mouse pointer.

All data available for a station is shown in a table.

Using tide stations online

Some modifications have been made to show which tide stations are used for tide display when you are using Local Admiralty Tide Tables (ATT).

We changed the ATT station display behavior so that:

  • the Instrument Panel lists the stations sorted by distance
  • the two closest stations are shown in the observation windows
  • values for disabled stations are not shown anymore (this used to be a bug in the observation windows)

Warning: All enabled tide stations are used and their values are weighed by distance which means that selected stations which are further away can have a great influence on the interpolation result if their value is very different from the ones close by. So if the ATT method is used make sure that irrelevant stations are not enabled.

Tide Manager - Tidal constituents from tide observations

Analyze tide observations and solve the harmonic constituents to create a new tide station

A new major feature has been added to the Tide Manager. A set of tide observations can be analyzed to compute the harmonic constituents and create a new (full harmonic) tide station with these constituents.

This feature can be accessed by a new menu option Stations > Add new > From Observations...
The user then has to choose one or more files containing the tide observations.
Supported formats are:

  • Export from Tide Manager
  • Streaming tide log from Tide Manager
  • Custom format

The user then sees a dialogue where the basic properties of the new tide station should be entered, the source of observations should be chosen and the time zone of the observations should be selected.

When the user clicks Analyze, the harmonics constituents are calculated and when successful, a new tide station with those constituents is added to the list of available stations.

Search function

The 'search for tide station' function has been improved and function based on position can be used when trying to find the nearest predicted tide station.
